Diversity Tickets For Under Represented Groups

The WordPress community spans the globe and includes thousands of people who are interested in WordPress. If you have an interest in WordPress, you’re a part of the community!

We’re working on creating an inclusive WordCamp Halifax, with the aim of increasing the diversity in our community. We truly want to create an event that anyone with an interest in WordPress can attend and get a lot out of.

We believe everyone should feel welcome to join in the WordPress fun and have access to the many opportunities this community provides.

WordCamps are one such opportunity. Organized entirely by volunteers, they’re a chance for the community to get together, learn, exchange knowledge and celebrate WordPress.

Tickets for under-represented groups

With this in mind, we’re giving away 10 WordCamp Halifax tickets to people from groups under-represented at WordCamps.

Under-represented groups include, but are not limited to First Nations, women, individuals with a disability, Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people and LGBTQIA+ people.

Why free tickets?

By giving away a limited number of free tickets, we hope to provide a bit of extra encouragement to take part in WordCamp Halifax.

We want to assure everyone: you absolutely are welcome.

We’re doing as many things as we can to be inclusive at WordCamp Halifax. Diversity Tickets are just one of the things we’re doing.

Some of the other things we’re doing to create an inclusive WordCamp are:

  • Wheelchair accessible venue
  • Thanks to our sponsors, our full priced tickets are much lower than the actual cost per attendee. We charge $25 for a WordCamp Halifax 2018 ticket, but the real cost per attendee is $55.
  • Promoting our Code of Conduct in the lead up and during the event

If you have any suggestions about how we can make WordCamp Halifax more inclusive, please get in touch with us and let us know.

How do I get a Diversity Ticket?

Diversity Tickets are available now by entering the coupon code “DWordCamp2018” on the ticket page: https://2018.halifax.wordcamp.org/tickets/

Diversity Tickets are limited to one per person.

If you have any issues claiming a ticket, please get in touch and we can help.

To qualify for a Diversity Ticket you don’t need to explain to us (or anybody) why you think you’re from an under-represented group. You also don’t need to meet any specific criteria.

The important part is: you’re welcome at WordCamp Halifax and we’d love you to join us.

We’re starting by giving away 10 tickets and are aware that’s not very many. We will explore adding more next year though.

What’s included with a Diversity Ticket?

Diversity Tickets come with exactly the same perks as the WordCamp Halifax 2018 Tickets, including full access to the conference, swag, free lunch and After Party.

Please note, we won’t be providing travel or accommodation.

Will anyone know that I’ve claimed a Diversity Ticket?

No, not unless you want them to. Once you’ve claimed your Diversity Ticket, your profile will appear on the attendee list, the same as all attendees. It will not be made public that you’ve claimed a Diversity Ticket.

Only this year’s organizers will know who has a Diversity Ticket (this is because we have access to the WordCamp Halifax 2018 website admin).

You’re more than welcome to tell people you’ve claimed a Diversity Ticket though – it’s totally up to you.

What if I claim a ticket but can’t attend?

If you can’t attend WordCamp, we ask that you get in touch with us as soon as possible to let us know. That way we can release your Diversity Ticket for someone else to use.

Please help us spread the word

We’re aware we need to reach beyond our usual networks to increase the diversity of WordCamp Halifax.

With that in mind, we would love if you could help us spread the word. Please let others know about the availability of these Diversity Tickets through your own networks, so we can reach as many people as possible.

If you’re reading this and don’t consider yourself to be from an under-represented group, we would still love your help in spreading the word.

And as always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
